San Diego StatisticsCurrent estimates put the number of San Diego homeless at 7,892. Some experts say it is considerably higher - nearer to 10,000 people, since it's difficult to count the "hidden homeless" who often stay with families and friends. the numbers are significant, as are the resources required to bring this tragic situation to an end. Where do they live? Most of San Diego County's homeless are located in urban rather than rural areas, with more than half of all homeless living in San Diego proper with high visibility in other cities such as El Cajon, Oceanside, and Escondido. The annual homeless count showed these percentages by region:
What's the cost?First of all, the cost of doing nothing is significant. The chronically homeless put a strain on medical, emergency, and police services at a high cost to our community. The cost of supportive housing through the Home Again program would cost around $10,000 per person per year. And the potential savings to our region's services could be in the millions of dollars per year - dollars that could be put to use helping the many who find themselves homeless for the first time and are seeking help in shelters and transitional housing. A study conducted in San Diego showed that continuing on our current path is much more expensive than moving homeless off the street into permanent supportive housing.
